Aaron’s Sins

12 October 2008. Reformed Evangelical Church Singapore (GRII). Sermon by Ev. Hendra Wijaya, MCS.

Main Bible passage: Exodus 32: 1 – 5.

Song of Praise:

Blessed Assurance

One of the main theme in the old testament is “Recognize your God”. While in the new testament is “Love your God, and other human beings like yourself”

In the bible, we can find a lot of story where people who once so devoted to God, suddenly disillusioned and eventually left God. In Exodus 32, we see that Moses was called by God just for 40 days, but the people of Israel has become impatient. This proves that people who promise that he/she wants to know God, may not do so.

Notice at verse 1 (NKJV)

1And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron and said unto him, “Arise, make us gods which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him.”

The people of Israel is asking Aaron to create gods which they can see.

But, we also know that the wisdom of the crowd often create chaos. Look at what happen to the US Financial Crisis 2008. In Exodus 32, the wisdom of the crowd bring disaster upon the people of Israel.

Look at verse 2 (NKJV)

2And Aaron said unto them, “Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.”

Why did Aaron think of golden earrings?…Aaron did not seek the word of God. Aaron did not pray to God, he straight away ask for golden earrings. The reason is, he was influenced by the Egyptian culture. In ancient Egypt, all the gods are in the form of golden statues.

Inside Aaron’s mind the molten calf is not a sin, he was not wrong. To Aaron, it was just a symbol, just an illustration, nothing more. But we need to ask ourselves: Can God be represented?…Of course NOT!!!! (Aaron thinking was already against God).

Notice what he said next:

4And he received them from their hand, and fashioned it with an engraving tool after he had made it a molten calf; and they said, “These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt!

When Aaron linked the molten calf and exodus from Egypt, he remembered what God had done for Israel. But did the molten calf lead Israel out from Egypt?…NO. (Aaron was committing a sin against God).

Notice what he did next:

5And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the LORD.”

He built an altar for the molten calf!!!!, which is a bigger sin in the eyes of the Lord. Abraham was the first person who built an altar, but he has his reasons for doing so: (1) To give thanks to God; (2) Covenant with God. Can these reasons applied to a molten calf?!!!!!!!!!

St.John and his role in Christianity

5 October 08. Reformed Evangelical Church Singapore (GRII). Sermon by Rev. Stephen Tong

Galilea is a simple province. Most of its inhabitant are fisherman, who are not intellectuals. Therefore, Galilea is not seen as a birthplace of great men. But the irony is Jesus Christ choose all twelve of His disciples from Galilea. Voltaire, the French philosopher once said 240 years ago, “Let that Jesus who created His religion with the twelves Galilean people establishes The Christianity, and let me, the only French would destroy them all from the history !.”

Can this happen?….had it happened?…Of course not. What Jesus did is not wrong, Jesus did not choose people like Nicodemus who are so academic. The question is why?….Why did Jesus choose Galilean people?…Did Jesus only choose un-academic people so that they can easily be conned by Him?…Was it because what Jesus did something who is un-academic?…

We know that God’s word cannot be understood by cognitive thinking. So it is not because Galilean people are stupid, and easily cheated. There are something that we need to take note: Those who are chosen by Jesus finally achieve more than even those people with the highest qualifications. Jesus choose people who can OBEY God’s word and has Heaven’s blessing so that they can accept and understand God’s will that come out from the mouth of Jesus.

We also need to think, why did Jesus choose John?…he is just a teenager, he is not matured, he is not highly educated. What’s the use of having John in Jesus’ disciples. The Holy Bible recorded that John is a disciples who most understand God’s will, more than Peter, etc. John is also the youngest disciples. When John wrote his books, Paul and Peter had died for about 22 years. Who can continue God’s work, Who can fight for truth?…At that time, early churches facing 4 big challenges. So only one man can answer that challenges: John, at a ripe age of 90. Why wait only at 90, then write biblical passage?…Isn’t Christianity more or less established everywhere?….Don’t forget that Christians’ enemy also occur everywhere.

Who were churches’ enemy?

1. Abuse from politics. When Jesus still alive, the people of Israel was allowed to call their God, God, and they will not be punished. Before Jesus was born, Rome was only a small country, not an empire. Romulus and Remus found Rome, and it became an empire few decades before Jesus was born. The first roman emperor is Augustus (which actually General Octavian). When he become the first emperor, he change Rome into empire, in this period, Jesus was born. Rome used the mindset: Attack first before attacked. Such mindset cause continuous expansion campaigns, and it also made Rome arrogant. Before long, Rome has build the greatest empire in the whole history of the world. But, Augustus found one nation that is very difficult to be conquered, that is the Jews. For the emperor Augustus, the whole Rome belongs to him; and all its citizen call him god. Only the jews who are not willing to call him god. The Jews said God is Jehovah, the creator of heaven and earth. And for the Jews, emperor Augustus was going to die several decades later, but the Jews’ God live forever. So the emperor decided to found 1 nation 2 system. Therefore, 1 nation 2 system was not invented by Deng Xiaoping, but from Rome.

All strong government is going to be weak. The main weakness is insecurity. When Romans felt insecure, Romans were anxious, and they strengthen their military. The irony is the stronger its military prowess, the more it felt anxious. This is military psychology, political psychology. In all Rome’s territory, the city of Jerusalem has the greatest number of Rome’s soldier (about 180,000 soldiers, especially when Easter). The Romans were afraid that the Jews revolt.

Why did the Romans who initially let the Jews worship their God, suddenly killed so many Christians? Because the Jews changed from calling their invisible god as God, to calling the visible Jesus of Nazaret as God. This is the start of abuse by the Romans.  Especially when they found that Jesus died and rose on third day. Not only did He rose from the dead, His influence is getting bigger. The emperor had released a decree to capture and abuse Christians. If you have the opportunity to visit Rome, don’t forget to visit the Catacombs, which was underground shelter for Christians.

2. Academic World. Philosophers and intellectuals wrote article which insult, humiliate, abuse, and mock Christianity because Christians no longer pay respect to gods. The intellectuals do not believe that the dead can be revived, and the birth of Jesus through virgin Mary. To them, this fact was absurd and impossible.

3. Imposter who wrote gospels and using the disciples names. This is the most dangerous enemy, because they said they are Christians and they wrote the bible’s books. Some of them wrote Barnabas, Mary Magdalene, Judas gospels (many of them written by Gnostic, who didn’t understand God’s wisdom). In present day, this threat comes in the form of people who present themselves as priests, they build churches, they call themselves church of God, they preach, they accept tithe but for themselves. This is Churches’ latent enemy, the enemy seek to deceive Christians with little faith. Unfortunately when this form of enemy appear, Paul and Peter had died. At the closing of first century AD, it is not only the four bible passage that existed, but there are many passages, including false passages. There was only one disciple who still living: John. Therefore, he wrote his books.

4. Unsincere Christians. Their behavior did not reflect Christians faith, and they are hypocrites. John wrote his books also to address this matter.

In new testament, the first four books are as follows: (1)Matthew; (2)Mark; (3)Luke; and (4)John. The book of John was written last, and at that time the danger that threaten early churches already ubiquitous and scary. The fact that John can live that long is God’s will. John is exiled in Patmos island, and he patiently lived in that island. One day, John saw the gate of heaven open, and Jesus was present. The book of John makes the bible complete. The bible is the only book in the history of human beings, the only book above all human religions with the beginning we called it Creation of God and with the ending as the Revelation of God concerning the final days of universe.

What is the difference between the book of John with the previous three?…In school of theology, the first three gospels are called Synoptic gospels, which have similar characteristics. While the gospel of John is a very unique, different – the distinctive gospel. What so special about the gospel of John?…Gospel of Matthew, Mark, and Luke mostly recorded the live of Jesus day by day, and the gist of Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees academically & according to scripture. In addition, the three books cited many miracles performed by Jesus. The gospel of John recorded God’s promises, God’s thoughts, and the gist of Jesus’ words.

When Jesus was still alive, he performed 35 miracles. The gospel who record the least of such miracles is actually the gospel of John. It is not that John do not believe that Jesus can perform miracles. Example: The first miracle performed by Jesus, turning water to wine, was recorded by John. The main uniqueness of the gospel of John is that it tells us Jesus as Son of God.

The gospel of Matthew tells us Jesus is King, that is why it started with Jesus’ family tree. The gospel of Mark tells us Jesus is servant. While the gospel of Luke said that Jesus is True Man (Son of Man). However, as we have discussed above, the gospel of John said that Jesus is the Son of God, and He is God.

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt (Part I)

Rev. Dr. Stephen Tong of GRII gave his sermons on 29 June 2008 at Queenstown Presbyterian Church.

Songs of Praise:

1. O Sture Gud by Carl G. Boberg (1885)

2. I Need Thee Every Hour by Annie S. Hawks (1872)

3. Showers of Blessing by Daniel W.Whittle (1883)

Main Bible Passage: Genesis 42: 1 – 25.

Look at Genesis 42: 1 – 2:  1 When Jacob heard that grain was available in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you standing around looking at one another? 2 I have heard there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy enough grain to keep us alive. Otherwise we’ll die.”

Observed that only Jacob has insight. He also updated with the latest news, namely, there is grain in Egypt. This implies that the one who drive forward a family, is still the parents. Notice Jacob’s last sentence: “to keep us alive. Otherwise we’ll die.”

Look at verse 4. 4 But Jacob wouldn’t let Joseph’s younger brother, Benjamin, go with them, for fear some harm might come to him. According to ST, Jacob didn’t let Benjamin go, because Jacob remembered his love for Rachel, since she only give birth to two child: Joseph and Benjamin.

Look at verse 7. 7 Joseph recognized his brothers instantly, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where are you from?” he demanded.  ST explained that Joseph couldn’t say that he is Joseph, their brother whom they sold. Joseph couldn’t say it because he is in front of Eqyptians, and he is the Prime Minister.

Verse 9. 9 And he remembered the dreams he’d had about them many years before.  Recall Genesis 37: 10 – 11 (NLT). Especially verse 11. See the different reaction between Joseph’s brothers and Joseph’ father.  10 This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?” 11 But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.

Although scolding him, Joseph’s father is more insightful and open-minded than his brothers. Rev. Stephen Tong (ST) added that if you listen something outside your understanding (ST termed it “Shock Therapy”), you need to listen positively. You need to re-think on what you’ve just heard just like Joseph’s father did. Don’t blindly reject those that have different opinion from you.

Now, Joseph’s dream is came into reality. His brothers couldn’t see that the man standing in front of them is Joseph (look at verse 8), because they think that it is impossible for a brother whom they sold as slave to rose became Prime Minister of Egypt. Joseph’s brothers have narrow mindset.

In verse 9, 12, and 14, we can see that Joseph are persistently accused his brothers as spies. ST explained that Joseph use psychology to interogate his brothers. Joseph wanted to know whereabout of his brother, Benjamin and his father.

In verse 11, his brothers claim to be honest men. 11 We are all brothers—members of the same family. We are honest men, sir! We are not spies!”  But, look at what happened in verse 13. 13 “Sir,” they said, “there are actually twelve of us. We, your servants, are all brothers, sons of a man living in the land of Canaan. Our youngest brother is back there with our father right now, and one of our brothers is no longer with us.”  ST explained that by persistent accusasion, Joseph managed to know information about Benjamin. Joseph also know that his brothers are not entirely honest with him. Notice that his brothers claim that “one of our brother is no longer with us”, this is half-truth statement, they should have said “one of our brother is DEAD”

Because Joseph’s brother can’t be entirely trusted, Joseph decided to test his brothers. Notice in verse 15. 15 This is how I will test your story. I swear by the life of Pharaoh that you will never leave Egypt unless your youngest brother comes here!.  Notice again in verse 19, the phrase “honest men” appear again. 19 If you really are honest men, choose one of your brothers to remain in prison. The rest of you may go home with grain for your starving families. 20 But you must bring your youngest brother back to me. This will prove that you are telling the truth, and you will not die.” To this they agreed.

Joseph is a role-model for young Christians. He is intelligent (the way he tested his brothers) and he is kind. (Look at verse 25). 25 Joseph then ordered his servants to fill the men’s sacks with grain, but he also gave secret instructions to return each brother’s payment at the top of his sack. He also gave them supplies for their journey home. ST explained that Joseph did not take revenge on what had happened to him, he willingly forget past grudge with his brothers. ST also mentioned that as Christians, it is not good enough to be kind, Christians need to be both intelligent and kind!

When God Calls part II

Pre-Sermon Song of praise: Esurientes Implevit Bonis, Magnificat 9, by Johann S.Bach

Rev.Dr. Stephen Tong of GRII gave powerful sermon today in Queenstown Presbyterian Church. Main bible passage: Genesis 41: 37 – 57; Genesis 42: 1 – 5.

Introduction

Christianity is about covenant. Old testament covenant is through animal’s blood (usually lamb), while New testament covenant is through Jesus’ blood.

Historian generally understand that there is greater force intervened at one point of history when crisis seemed to overwhelm the world and people in it.  Or to put it simply, there is supernatural force involved to make significant event and thus, new history created.

Rev. Stephen Tong went on to explain that a trouble-free person is not good. Because a person who never experience difficulties don’t have sufficient mental strength to succeed.

About Joseph

There are two possible end-result for a man who is treated unfairly:

  1. He became evil person, who live for vengeance.
  2. He became wiser, more matured, more sympathetic (In short, he became a better person like what happened to Joseph).

The good thing about difficulties is there is a limit to it. Look at the life of Joseph, he was sold when he was 17 years old, and 13 years later when he was 30 years old, he became the prime minister of Egypt. Mind you, that 13 years of wait is a life full of difficulties (e.g. seduced, falsely accused, thrown to jail)

Why God allows difficulties befall mankind?…So than man can appreciate the meaning of healthy, success, freedom, and victories planned by God.

About Holy Spirit

Look at verse 38: 38 So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?”

This is the first incident recorded in Holy Bible, about “filled by holy spirit” experience. There are certain characteristics about “filled by holy spirit”:

  1. Wisdom beyond man’s understading. In Joseph case, ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dream correctly.
  2. Faithful and responsible. In Joseph case, he remains loyal to Pharaoh and become a blessing for the people of Egypt.

It is not about speaking in tongue, or fall down (i.e. unlike the teachings of Charismatic church).

“filled by holy spirit” also transcend culture. Look at verse 39: 39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. The God that Pharaoh refers to is Joseph’s God, The Lord of Israel. Pharaoh admit the power of other culture’s God!!

The reason of Egypt became one of great nations of ancient time

The reason is because the leader of Egypt (i.e. Pharaoh) appreciate talent regardless of race and nationality. The story of Joseph bear witness of the pharaoh’s wisdom. Pharaoh promoted an outsider (i.e. Joseph from Israel) to second highest post in Egypt.

Song of Praise: All Hail The Power Of Jesus’ Name by Edward Perronet 1779

When God Calls part I

Rev. Dr. Stephen Tong of GRII delivered his sermons on 08 June 2008, in Queenstown Methodist Church. Main bible passage: Genesis 41: 1 – 40.

Two years has passed since Joseph asked chief cupbearer to remember him, after he had translate the chief cupbearer dream. Rev. Stephen Tong went on to explain that God took two years to get Joseph out of prison. Certainly, God has HIS own timing in doing HIS work. Joseph, as servant of God, never complain about unfair treatment, that he is receiving from pharaoh, to God. Joseph obediently accept God’s plan, and this attitude is what makes him a role model for all youngster today. Be patient in waiting for God!

In Genesis 41: 8, we know that no wisemen able to interpret the meaning of Pharaoh’s dreams. It’s amazing isn’t it?…NO intelligent men can do it! However, Joseph step forward, said that “Not me, but God…” (verse 16), and he correctly translate two Pharaoh’s dreams. This implies two things:

  1. Human power is limited, and that’s the reason we need faith, we need to pray!!. The real prayer is the pray that admit our limitation as human.
  2. God let certain events happened for HIS purpose.

Rev. Stephen Tong also noticed that Joseph keep his composure and confidence when talking to the ruler of the land. And he bravely interpret Pharaoh dream, he is not intimidated by Pharaoh’s worldly status. This has several implications. First, you should not be anxious when trouble come. Keep on praying and wait for HIM to work. Second, when opportunity present itself, grab it so that God can be glorified. Last, be confident!!, the Lord is with you if you obediently follow HIS plan.
